Transformation Tuesday- China Cabinet

TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY!!!

Matt (my husband) called me the other day with news that he had seen a china cabinet that was a total steal and he went ahead and purchased it! In my mind I felt excited and also concerned. I was excited to say we might have some extra storage space for our relatively small kitchen. On the other hand, I was concerned because I had no idea what this cabinet looked like! When Matt brought it into the house my face must have dropped because I had no idea what to expect! I found out that he had only seen photos of it and hadn't seen it in person until they went to pick it up and he thought it was resale ready because there was no way we could make it work in our house.

I stared at the cabinet for a few days and was determined not to get rid of it because the storage space was much needed and maybe it wouldn't be so terrible after all...
As you can see the cabinet is a cream color and the inside was a yellowish aged and slightly dusty color. I was far from impressed and as much as I wanted it to grow on me... It was not happening!

I want to go ahead and say that I am a strong advocate for NOT using chalk paint because I have never had a good experience with it, however, I decided I had some leftover and thought it might be a neat attempt. I went for it. I jumped in head first! With the first few strokes being a bold teal, I thought I was going to pass out because it was so bright that it scared me!

After painting sections of the cabinet and using a wet rag to wash the color out, I became oddly impressed with the process of painting this "hunk o junk" as we had previously thought of it.

After working with the teal the yellow inside really stood out and I decided to take it one step further and repaint the inside stark white so it stood out and the light above the top shelf would seem brighter!

On top of painting the cabinet itself, taking the hardware off to repaint with a copper hammered spray paint make it that much more appealing!

All in all, this project was finished in 2 days! I really do not enjoy painting and do not enjoy working with furniture either!
However, I can not tell you enough how excited I was that this was the final product!

So, what projects have you tackled? Which ones have you been putting aside?

  1. I love this! I need to do this with my china cabinet. It's so dated.

    1. Please be sure to share with me when you complete it! I really was surprised at how easy it was! I really dislike setting time aside for these type of projects but I was amazed at the impact this one cabinet has!
